NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- The major averages are poised for a mixed open Thursday with investors waiting for the morning's dose of economic news and the European Central Bank's decision on interest rates.

September S&P 500 futures added 1.10 points, or 0.1 percent, and were trading about 3.10 points below fair value, according to HL Camp & Co. And Nasdaq futures lost 13.50 points, or 0.9 percent.

In shares trading before the opening bell, Sun Microsystems (SUNW) was offered at $12.50 on Instinet, below the $12.69 seen in after-hours, as brokerage analysts trimmed revenue and earnings estimates after a mid-quarter update from the company late Wednesday.

Government issues retreated after two days of smashing gains.

The 10-year Treasury note was off 3/32 to yield ($TNX) 4.78 percent while the 30-year government bond slipped 5/32 to yield ($TYX) 5.375 percent.

Thursday's economic calendar contains the release of weekly initial claims, July personal income -- expected to show a 0.3 percent increase -- and July personal consumption expenditures, seen rising 0.2 percent. Read and check economic calendar and forecasts.

In the currency sector, the dollar lost 0.2 percent to 119.82 yen while the euro edged up 0.1 percent to 90.81 cents.
