Hi nigel,

While I tend toward a cynic's view of the world, I do sense that Venter is far more interested in advancing the science than he is in merely lining his own pocket. He's someone I've followed in a number of venues and publications, and I've come away thoroughly impressed with the man as a scientist, a intellectual and a decent human being. I don't know Haseltine or the Novartis crowd well enough to comment on them as personalities. Haseltine has done some great research in the AIDS/HIV arena, so he's no slouch as far as his science background. In conversation with an MD who's a
specialist in the area of the genome, I learned that Haseltine had unraveled a much more complex genetic picture to the HI Virus than had previously been understood in the literature in the late 1980's. So, he's got a sound basis for his beliefs. That said, I did get the intuition that there was a bit of desperation when the February announcements of a much smaller human genome than previously projected were made public.

Best, Ray :)
