Tim, others:

I recently reread the HLIT investors packet and have a couple of questions and concerns. I notice that HLIT's top customers are ANTEC (US distributor), Capella (Canadian distributor), Tratec (UK distributor). I assume that these other distributors, like ANTEC, are systems integrators who combine components from various manufacturers. Often systems integrators have better profit margins than component manufacturers (although there has been nothing wrong with HLIT's profit margins). I was wondering if you might have any opinion of Antec and whether there is much opportunity for HLIT to cut out the middleman distributor and possibly do some systems integration itself.

Another issue is dependence on sales of DFB transmitters and receivers, which together accounted for 75% of sales in 1995. As WDM heats up the photonics market and Corning, Lucent and others gear up their optoelectronic component divisions while Tellabs and Nortel also view the opportunities in cable, can we expect small focussed HLIT to compete against these big boys or do you think HLIT may end up getting taken over?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
SC
