Being a developer ( and not writing much assembler ) I can only appreciate speed from a higher level. I can probably come up with cool benchmarks at that level but then the compiler takes over and that's where the optimization will happen. Like I said before, most programmers these days ( especially with the advent of java ) write very high level code. This is the stuff that should be of interest to everybody and NOT whether we can tweak a certain architecture to produce better performance. To be honest with you, we design software to be quickly developed and easy to maintain. I have never worried about what the L1 cache is going to be and redesign something to fit that.

One of the recent development gurus for Extreme Programming which is an up and coming discipline said that you develop stuff to meet deadlines and you optimize later if you have the time.
