Self-defense against the impending Israeli attack? Nah, that's too obvious . . . You are postulating that Egypt was going to attack with 2 divisions, a force which proved not even enough for defense, let alone attack. Let's not forget that Egypt had good reason to suspect Israel's intent, after the treacherous attack of 1956 (which the eloquent dove Abba Eban lied to the U.S. about), and after Israel had established its expansionist philosophy in 1947.
