Another view is that INTC's capital equipment spending is the only card left for a company whose main market's growth has slowed due to its maturity and whose main product no longer enjoys a monopoly position and is limited by its aging architecture. INTC's 2GHz chip achieved about equal performance with a 1.4GHz Athlon chip according to a news article I just read.
