.Gay and lesbian Pride TV applies for licence
ICULTURE (email)

TORONTO - A Hamilton-based broadcaster is applying for a licence to run Pride TV, a 24-hour gay and lesbian channel. According to a National Post report, the application will be filed with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission Monday.

The federal broadcast regulator is prepared to license 10 new channels. Pride TV would run programs ranging from Kids in the Hall reruns to old movies and shows on interior decorating.

Pride TV would supply a mix of news and information programming, including health, travel, biographies of prominent gays and lesbians, cooking, decorating and movies.

Sources say the man behind the application is John Levy, the majority owner of Headline Sports. He declined to be interviewed.

Carmela Laurignano is a radio executive whose company applied last year to run a gay and lesbian radio station in Toronto. She has seen the proposal and says the new specialty channel would be a good educational medium.

Meanwhile, a Canadian Alliance MP has spoken out in opposition to the channel. Jason Kenney says the CRTC would be wrong to license Pride TV while denying other applications such as the recently-proposed Catholic station called Eternal Word TV.

Pride TV would run programs ranging from Kids in the Hall reruns to old movies and shows on interior decorating.
