Hmmm, the computer under my desk was originally running Win98 and Office 97. It was upgraded to NT 4.0. It was then upgraded to Win2K and Office 2K. I've tested it with WinXP and Office XP and it still performs flawlessly. It was not top of the line when I bought it, yet here we are, two releases along and it's still doing fine.

None of this is surprising. These applications tend to be much more restricted by disk capacity than by the processor capacity. And disks just aren't any faster than they were five years ago.

In other words, the applications (at least on the business desktop) that will suck up all that processor capacity just aren't here. I wish they were. It would make it a lot easier for me to make money in the market. (Servers are a bit different, there are newer apps that are sucking up capacity there, but apparently even Intel doesn't seem to think the value is as compelling as it used to be, thus their new price structure.)

Education on the internet is nice, for some people and for some things. We've had mixed results with it. Some people don't learn well that way, and many topics are not easily conveyed on computers. In either case, most education packages run either in a browser or in another fairly simple client. How much CPU do you need to run one of those?
