In the new economy paradigm information, say in the form of a design, could be added into a chip made in Tiawan and assembled in Mexico and sold in Africa for use in some other product with some of the resulting profit electronicly deposited back in a bank in the U.S. Each step seeks out the most cost effective locale and methods.
In the transportation paradigm whole products need to be made, sold, and shipped. The value is in the end product, not in the process. A large part of the product may be made inefficiently so long as the final assembly has a reasonable profit margin.
