The Dept of Energy gets their info from the National Petroleum Council which is made up of oil CEO's including Dick Cheney. They may be under investigation soon for the first time in the NPC's existence. Not many noticed it yet but a recent LA Times front page article proved the NPC has given false and misleading data to the government regarding the amounts of oil and gas under the Rockies and Alaska and how difficult it would be to tap those sources. Since the NPC is funded by the oil companies themselves it can operate outside government channels though it is linked to the Energy Dept as their top advisory group. Our government depends on the NPC for accurate info. But they recently have turned into more of a partisan Big Oil lobbying group pushing for higher emissions, more pollution and more exploration into wilderness areas. In short, the source is in question for the first time, probably because we have two oilmen in the White House for the first time. All this came out in a email discussion I had with the LA Times reporter who covered the situation. It is the tip of the iceberg. The fact is the energy spikes didn't occur until May-June shortly before Cheney joined the Bush ticket. And they ended absolutely the week Jeffords switched parties and gave the Dems an investigative weapon.
