or it is a consensus about social order arrived at by a culture, in which case rights are something bestowed, and, if not bestowed, one is out of luck....... And is that not in fact what is observed? What do you mean by "inherent in the nature of man"? Breathing may be inherent in the nature of man; speech most likely is. But the principles of a legal system? I find that very hard to believe. And history to this point appears to contradict that. Even government is no more that 10,000 years old; democracy no more than 2500; "the rights of man" no more than a few hundred. For something inherent, they certainly took a long time to emerge.
