Tum Kurlak estimated that the total annual market for the 386 was going to be 50,000, since the 386 was only going to be needed by the power users of the PC. Yet the demand for the 386 skyrocketed in 88. There was no major new software in that time. What changed ? The answer is that the price of 386 based systems dropped to the affordable price range of $2,500, half the price in 86. The consumer and businesses were willing to pay $1000 extra for the pleasure of A FASTER DOS PROMPT. Who knows when a more optimistic consumer and business mindset will come into play ? The industry is awating Windows XP, and hopes that it will be a rerun of Windows 95, which triggered a big computer boom.
