Although in OTHER people intelligence isn't as important to me as cheerfulness and responsibility

Until you posted, it never occurred to me to think of those characteristics in terms of other people. After all, it is an instrument to help one understand one's own values. Interesting thought.

I guess it depends on which other people we're talking about. I'd certainly prefer the supermarket checker to be cheerful rather than intelligent. And my maid to be clean, if I still had one. Yet I don't put much weight on those characteristics in me. OTOH, I prefer intelligence in my friends. Not just prefer. That's a make or break characteristic. I don't suffer stupid or insipid people well. But I don't expect courage from other people although I expect it of myself. You're right, the list would be different.

I've always had just three criteria for the people I choose to be around. They need to be intelligent, together, and have spirit. Most anything else I can work around. I once had a friend who said she liked me because I didn't have any annoying habits. That was her main criterion--the absence of annoying habits. Apparently she found such people sufficiently rare. I hadn't thought about that in years and years. She may have had a point. I'm going to add that to my list.
