I agree it's interesting and not that curious. There are many cases where the initial purchase of capital equipment is subsidized and the profits are made with service agreements, spare parts etc. Look at aircraft jet engines, and there are many more examples.

I think the more interesting business models are in the way DoCoMo constructed the fee and charging models for introducing imode. That's more spectacular than subsidizing handsets, I think.

Another really interesting point is that DoCoMo has by far the highest ARPU of all mobile carriers that I know.
