Hi wanna_bmw; Re: "I believe that Intel can make the Pentium 4 work. It isn't light-years ahead of the Athlon, but right now, it does have an advantage in overall performance, thanks mostly to the steep frequency advantage."
The P4, as it's currently produced, is an expensive, high end, dual memory channel machine. The Athlon is an inexpensive, single channel machine. A better comparison, as far as performance goes, would be at the same price points. That is, compare the upcoming nForce 420, with its dual memory channels, to the P4 with dual RDRAM, and compare the single channel DDR based P4 with single channel DDR based Athlons.
Price is important.
