In my experience, pessimistic people tend to be very critical of others and negative in outlook. I guess there's a third choice - pragmatic - which is more neutral. A pragmatic person would not be 'bad', but an optimistic person would be good because they tend to see the good in others, even if the others are badly flawed. The best way I can say it is that optimists are charitable in spirit.
