GUNS

Could it be that Republicans really DO believe in banning guns?
The Utah Republican Party meets this weekend -- and vice
President Dick Cheney will be the keynote speaker.
But some gun groups were threatening to demonstrate
against him -- because the Secret Service wouldn't let
delegates carry their concealed weapons to the event. The
agents wanted gun owners to leave their weapons in their
cars -- even though the weapons are legal and properly
licensed.
The Utah Gun Owners Alliance was incensed -- and
announced plans to boo the vice president. But now
they've pulled back. Because there's a compromise: gun
owners will leave their weapons in storage lockers just
outside the metal detectors before the speech, and then,
after the speech, they can retrieve them.
And that satisified the Utah Gun Owners Alliance. They
see it as a VICTORY for gun owners. They do? It's a gun
ban! It's government agents forcing you to disarm. And the
Vice President, apparently has not problem with it.
I thought the Attorney General was pretty clear. He wrote
the NRA that he believes the Constitution creates an
individual right to keep and bear arms.
And I've heard gun
groups say repeatedly that you're SAFER in a room full of
people with guns than a room full of people who have been
disarmed by the government. Because then instead of
having maybe ten agents protecting him -- the vice
President would have maybe 200 armed delegates
protecting him.
But instead the Secret Service will disarm law-abiding gun
owners! When a politician preaches gun rights, but then
surrounds HIMSELF with a gun-free zone
-- isn't there a
word for that?
