Holy cow, did anyone get to watch the game, I am jealous<g>

Owen hat-trick as England crush Germany 5-1 in
qualifier

MUNICH, Sept 1 (Reuters) - A hat-trick from Michael Owen and one
each from his Liverpool team mates Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey
gave England an unbelievable 5-1 win over Germany in the Olympic
Stadium on Saturday to throw European World Cup qualifying Group
Nine wide open.

In one of the most remarkable internationals ever played between the two
old rivals, Germany went ahead through Carsten Jancker after six
minutes, but were then crushed by an astonishing attacking display by
England with goals from Owen after 12, 49 and 66 minutes, Gerard after
45 minutes and Heskey after 74 minutes.

Germany, who had not been beaten at the stadium since 1973 and had
only ever lost one World Cup qualifier in their history against Portugal 16
years ago, were totally over-run after starting the stronger side.

England, who had not won in Germany since 1965, improved more and
more as the game went on, holding firm with nine or 10 men behind the
ball and then breaking through the flimsy German defence almost at will
every time they counter-attacked.

Despite the crushing defeat, Germany stay top of the group with 16
points from seven matches, followed by England (13 from six). Germany
beat England 1-0 at Wembley earlier in qualifying.

If Germany beat Finland in their last qualifier against Finland on October
6 and England beat Greece and Albania in their last two games, the group
will be decided on goal difference as both teams will finish with 19 points.

But following this game England now have the better goal difference
(12-4) compared to Germany's (14-10).
