It seems to be a function of human psychology and I don't know why it works that way. The forward in the Prechter book talks about it a bit. Impulsive 5's corrective 3's, although it is much more complex and less clear when put into practice. The best place to see it clearly is when you trade intraday futures. The patterns keep showing up.
