I'm not clear on how other's behaviors can invade your moral space if you aren't cognizant of it

Obviously we have to be cognizant of it to have any opinion at all... but we were talking (at least I think we were) about the people we choose to have around us- those whom we would choose as friends, the qualities we value in others. I said I valued tolerance. I didn't mean that I thought we had to put up with every idiot who decides to impose his own actions and their consequences upon us, or that we would tolerate in our friends things that violate our deepest beliefs. But I value in people an ability to step outside of their own system and listen to others, accepting, if not agreeing with the differences.

And when you say that it is a passive process... I don;t agree. There is a huge divide between indifference and tolerance.
It 's HARD to listen to other's convictions when they are different from one's own, to accept without always trying to change those things that don't fall into your own outline. It takes an effort.

I don't believe it's incumbent upon us to go to war with every offbase opinion that we hear, or reject a person who doens't follow our personal guidebook of perfect behavior.

With your examples, I think you have moved beyond the individual question into X's third area -community. This is different.
I will have to think about it, but my first reaction to what you say is that I am less tolerant as the area widens and involves more than one individual and begins to be about issues that do affect society. I always get blurry when we move into larger areas.
