Tench, are you sure? I remember seeing slides from IDF before the Athlon was launched and the P4 was scheduled to be introduced at 1Ghz. In the same series of slides, the PIII was shown as being at 733 and the Athlon ( projected because it was an unknown at the time ) was showing as maxing out at 666Mhz. My personal feeling is that Intel got caught with their pants down since they underestimated the Athlon Max Mhz and went back and dusted-off some alternative design for the P4. ( Maybe the P5? ).
I wish I had a link to those slides. Someone in this thread must have the or can at least back me up on this.
