You will find many people who say it is not confined to the tech sector -- only that the tech sector was the first domino -- and what a giant domino at that. Time will tell. Japan's stock market bubble coincided with a real estate bubble linked to rising stock prices. The linkage is less clear in the USA, but many are now saying that real estate prices will now slide. On the heels of the stock market bubble-bursting, a real estate slump of significant proportions would be bad -- very bad -- for consumer confidence. Amidst a global slowdown, well, we would find our markets in bad shape. Banks would find themselves with huge commercial and personal loan losses -- escalating into a credit crunch because there is nobody credit worthy to lend money to -- which is why zero interest rates in Japan make no difference.
