Cisco isn't the only abuser of pro-forma statements. It is very widespread now. What's worse is that these new economy analysts have become inordinately lazy. Analysis use to mean interviewing the executives at a company, checking with their suppliers, customers and partners, doing an economic analysis, an industry analysis, then a company market and financial analysis. Then you'd venture a valuation report and maybe even a buy or sell recommendation. Now these moron analysts on Wall Street, see their neighbors say "Buy", so they say "Buy". Then they see the morons on CNBC say Cisco is going bankrupt, so they publish an article about why you should buy Cisco at $82, and sell it at $16. What a joke. At least there's still a few people like you around that take a deeper look. The rest will get burned badly. Hell, I've been burned a little in this last year. But at least I corrected the situation. Good luck, John! It's a dog maul dog world out there. :)
