"a group of mainly Irish-American Catholics who deserted from the U.S. Army and fought for the Mexicans."

Perhaps they found the goings-on in Texas to be too similar to what Britain did to Ireland. Flood the land with "colonists" and then "vote" for British rule.

On the slavery issue, one has to wonder if continued British-rule would have brought a quicker and less bloody end to it. During the US Civil War, the British were clearly on the side of the South. If the US had remained in British hands, would the British have been quick to end slavery and reduce the amount of cotton needed for the textile mills? I wouldn't give the British much weight on the morality scale...It took them until the 20th Century to leave India.

Another group of Irishmen who caused a ruckus in North America were the Finians (this may be spelled wrong) -- a group of mainly Irish-Canadians who rebelled against the Canadian government. I think that rebellion ended when the Canadians finally caught their leader and hung him.
