The company headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, so far has already poured several hundreds of millions of US dollars into China. Nokia declined to disclose specific figures. Nokia is negotiating with Chinese partners to launch two new joint ventures in China, manufacturing mobile phones and net work equipment, said Jorma Ollila, president and chief executive officer of the company, in an interview with China Daily. Ollila declined to give further details, saying negotiations are still going on. Ollila left Beijing yesterday after a two-day visit discussing Nokia's new investment plans with top Chinese Government officials including Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo. Nokia has already set up six joint ventures in China plus branches and representative offices across the country, hiring altogether 2,000 people. Last year, Nokia generated total sales of US$1.2 billion in the Chinese market, double that of 1996. Brisk sales in the last three months promise another year of strong growth for Nokia in China in 1998, he said. Ollila said he has a lot of confidence that the Chinese economy and its telecommunications industry will continue to grow steadily. Nokia has not seen any impact of the Southeast Asian financial turmoil on its China operations, Ollila said. Instead, "we have seen a very healthy continuance of our Chinese business." Ollila said the Chinese market is one of the major driving forces behind his company's overall 34 per cent sales growth worldwide. China has become Nokia's third largest market after the United States and Britain. Although it is difficult to forecast the outcome of the turmoil in the Southeast Asian countries the Asian-Pacific region in the medium and long term will still be one of the major growth areas for telecommunications, he said. The Asia-Pacific region in total accounted for 23 per cent of Nokia sales, after Europe's 59 per cent. The Americas constituted 18 per cent of sales. Nokia's global sales grew by 34 per cent to $9.8 billion and operating profits rose by 98 per cent to $1.58 billion. Earnings per share soared 97 per cent to US$3.86. Its net sales, profits and earnings per share were the highest in the company's 132-year history, the company announced last Thursday. The company said it had over 21 per cent of the world's mobile phone market in 1997. An estimated 101 million units were sold last year. It also had almost 30 per cent of the global market in infrastructure for the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). The number of cellular subscribers worldwide at the end of 1997 was estimated at 201 million, up from 135 million a year earlier. _Date: 02/18/98_ _Author: Jing Ji_ _Copyright© by China Daily_
