<When I look at it this way, I can't be surprised at some of the gang behaviors that may be reflecting cultural attitudes about women (e.g.) To change deep-rooted attitudes takes generations not days.>
Not really Rambi, it just takes a few years in the cooler [which also has the happy effect of cutting off the prospect of them breeding]. Or, you can change their attitude instantly, by re-education, as they do in China, with a bullet in the back of their brain. Those who are considering doing the same crimes will get religion all of a sudden. Those who were re-educated will never again appear before a judge with another victim to answer for.
No cultures include rape, murder, pillage and plunder [within their own community]. The cure is quite simple and involves "re-education" of those who indulge those values.
Removing some of the driving forces would be good too, such as that caused by teaching people that they are hard done by and should have a chip on both shoulders because their great, great, great, great grandfather was [perhaps] taken away from a miserable life in Niger [which is not a racist term] and given a better [I wouldn't be surprised] life on a plantation in the USA, albeit as a slave - some modern day employees argue that their lives are little different from that of a slave though there are of course legal protections against excessive beating and there is the ability to vote [which never seems to take away the demands of the boss and taxman].
I hope that's not a contentious suggestion.
Making drugs legal would solve a lot of crime too. Drugs only became a big problem when they became illegal. When old Chinese guys used to smoke opium in downtown Auckland, that didn't make it attractive. People have gone to pot for thousands of years but really took it on when it became illegal and thereby became fashionable! It's now a major part of the culture in Kiwiland. It's like an assertion of independence and defiance and individuality [ironically and inaccurately] in an increasingly smothering motherland.
Hmm, I am trying to cut down on ranting. Maybe I should smoke dope instead.

PS: Yes, I should read the history of exactly how people came to be removed from where they lived in Africa. Were they already slaves, sold for profit by their chiefs? Were they extra, landless, people the local chief didn't want but could get a few bucks if he let the British take them away? Was their homeland simply invaded and the population enslaved? Ignorance doesn't stop me making suggestions about the situation today. |
