The San Jose Mercury News ran another negative (hatchet job) story on Oracle a few weeks ago, ostensibly complaining about the way a DMV contract was handled. They repeatedly "quoted" the DMV person responsible for the purchase as saying something like "The Oracle sales rep told me that IBM couldn't match the price they were giving us", and then they would laugh a lot about this quote. Perhaps that's what the guy said, but I imagine what he really said is "The Oracle sales rep showed me all of this Dataquest information about cost overruns on IBM+<any app vendor> projects, and that scared the crap out of me, and when I talked to the IBM guys about this, I couldn't get a straight answer, so I signed the Oracle fixed-price deal".

I've pretty much given up expecting the press to give Oracle a fair shake. Larry is the guy they all love to hate for some reason, although the fact is that they'd probably like him if they got to know him, and they'd probably dislike Gates if they got to know him. But for the time being they are going to slam Larry and Oracle every chance they get, and write as little about MSFT as they can (they make it sound like the EU action against MSFT is unfounded AND no big deal...)
