Using cutting-edge technology and exploration techniques, the firm has built its reputation and its business hunting down oil and natural gas in places peers have either abandoned or avoided. In the early 1990s, while exploring in a part of Algeria that bigger competitors had already given up on, Anadarko used an unorthodox imaging technique to discover what has turned out to be a three-billion-barrel field. In 1996, in East Texas, it pulled gas out of rock once deemed too tight to crack. In 2000, in Alaska, it began pumping oil from a spot that other companies had written off after trying in vain to tap 100 wells. Anadarko turned up 430 million barrels.
