Ericsson Opens Handset Market,
Sets New Direction for Technology

Mobile phones capable of downloading video clips and Internet pages might not prove to be the money-spinners that handset manufacturers were hoping for.

Telefon L.M. AB Ericsson's announcement Friday that it will license its handset technology to all comers, and a similar move by Motorola Inc. in July, threatens to turn advanced third-generation handsets into commodity items even before the market takes off. The first third-generation handsets, which will take advantage of the high-speed wireless networks being built by mobile operators, are expected to appear on the European market late next year.

Ericsson has been licensing some of its wireless technology to a few select companies since the beginning of the year, but now it is creating a new unit, called Ericsson Mobile Platforms, that will license a wide range of handset technology to any manufacturer. Crucially, the new unit is prepared to license the complex radio technology needed for third-generation phones, which isn't readily available elsewhere.
