idler--Not only is there a need for wireless data, ultimately wireless becomes the technology of choice except where you have massively large data applications. Wireless becomes the ultimate choice for residential, low density applications, especially where users do not remain in one fixed location.

But think about the resistance to change, especially in the U.S., where there already is a very large, and generally good quality wired infrastructure. The regional Bell companies own most of the utility poles. Are they going to let that asset depreciate to zero just so that everyone can benefit from the superior, and ultimately lower cost wireless technology? Your point about Sprint is well taken, but remember that Sprint PCS is merely a tracking stock, still tied to its parent which operates a very large wired network.
