Re: will people buy new machines just to get XP?

There may be nearly as many people accelerating their PC purchases due to concerns over locking XP locking their PCs untill a new code from Microsoft is installed, as there are people postponing their purchases because they want the new OS. The reports of the XP requiring a new code from Microsoft after only trivial changes (adding or removing a USB printer or drive has been reported), but Microsoft supposedly has corrected those problems in the final release.

Most buyers probably remember that all their problems were already fixed by the release of Windows 95, then all their problems were fixed by Windows 98. If they really know anything, they are already running Windows 2000, which isn't much different from Windows XP, and they know that, too.

The infusion of advertising dollars from Microsoft, both direct and co-op, may help sales somewhat, but (as has been pointed out by others) there will also be a double-barreled set of competing ads from Sony and Microsoft as X-Box and playstation square off.

Another factor to consider is that one of the primary goals of XP has been to reduce piracy of Microsoft software and to let them increase per-box revenue by raising prices. It's possible that the added cost and installation complexity of XP (from a licensing standpoint) will actually deter sales of new machines.

So it's possible that the advent of XP will actually result in a small decrease in CPU unit sales.
