Jon, you are forced to use windows just like the generation that follows will be forced to use Linux.

"We" force "others", just as a different set of others force "us".

Dell and Compaq provide MSFT not because MSFT is breathing down their necks, but because the vast majority of Dell's and Compaq's consumers demand MSFT. Another apathetic set could care less, and those that absolutely refuse to buy MSFT are small enough right now that Dell and Compaq can afford to ignore them. It's called market power.

But if you are a customer, then you have a choice. For example, you could go buy Mac. Since you do not, you have been convinced. You may not like the alternatives, but you have been convinced of which is the least evil. Nobody said the convincing had to leave you with a good feeling.

If you have no choice, e.g. you are an engineer somewhere using what the IT department provides, well then you aren't a customer so you are right, MSFT doesn't have to convince you of squat.

John.
