I don't think flash will cut it - speed is not its only problem, but the life expectancy is limited as well (wrt the number of write cycles possible).

Other memory technologies are a possible replacement however (FRAM as an example). It will be a while before these replace HD though, as it is tough to replace a 200$ 20-40G HD with anything close to that.

How would an FRAM cache as a front end to a large HD sound - its infinite write ability, and non-volatility would allow caching say 128Mb-512Mb of HD safely, and even between reboots.
