gao, Afghanistan=Vietnam in terms of the military involvement. Both the USA and USSR could have won their wars. The USA departed because the South Vietnamese government was so corrupt that it lost the affection of it's own people. That meant the USA could not depend on the ARVN troops because wages and equipment were stolen by the crooked politicians and even the ARVN became demoralised and both incapable as well as untrustworth as many of the ARVN troops wanted the crooks out.

Now in Afghanistan the involvement of the USA was pivotal in the form of stinger missiles and other weapons that negated a lot of the soviet air power and heavy weapons leaving the task to men with rifles on both sides in rugged terrain. After a while the Soviets decided to stop the bleeding, mush like the USA.

Now the Taleban is turning back the clock to the middle ages, women are excluded from almost all tasks and are effective slaves. Women also have the external genitals cut off, including the clitoris as the men feel that they will not stray if they can never have a climax. No freedom of religion, a crime to proselytise anything execept the Muslim religion, a stone age cult.
So they will in the long run do great harm to their country, hell, they have done that in the short term. This was after the war and because of the inability of the disparate Afghan tribes to unite.
If they unite they could soon off the Taleban.
