From what I'm told, that's the same reason the "come" bet is much more popular than the "don't come" bet at the crap tables. Same odds, but a very different psychology.

On the other hand, winners are in very short supply at this juncture, so if you feel absolutely sure a stock is going to tank, why not profit from it? If you detest margin plays, as I do, and that limits you from going short, you could always buy putts, which have the advantage of a downside limited to the value of the premium.

Certainly not, but I do relate the backing of an opinion to the measure of conviction.
