I have my criticisms of Ehrenreich too, but it doesn't take away from the stories she documents. In fact, the conditions now are much easier than they were in the past Depends how far back you go. In the days before "urban renewal" every downtown had a skidrow. For some reason skidrows have gotten a bad rap, but they were a place where a guy who was down and out could get back on his feet. Hotels only charged 7-10 bucks a night. When I first left home I was making just above minimum wage. I was able to pay rent and maintain a decent car. I didn't save any money, but I ate in restaurants a couple of times a week and always had a refrigerator full of beer. I don't believe minimum wage would take care of those things today.
