The haredim ("ultra- orthodox") are a small fraction of the Israeli population. Most Israeli Jews, in fact, are secular. The remainder are mostly semi- observant. Although the synagogues they go to are Orthodox, they are more like Conservative Jews in the States. The reason that the haredim have a lot of power is that the Knesset uses proportional representation, so their parties can win concessions in the formation of governments. Both Labour and Likud have done it, when they were unable to share power. Usually, they end up with something like the education portfolio in the cabinet, and some concessions like exemptions from military service for yeshiva students. Israeli is far from a theocracy.......
