Thanks for the link. I was unaware the public safety radio interference issue consisted of more than one or two isolated incidents as the article reports. The following excerpt from an FCC document dated May 25, 2001 seems to indicate a solution for the problem, but I'm just guessing.

If you're seriously concerned about the issue, I think it would be wise to contact the investor relations department at Nextel. Hopefully they will be able to answer your questions.

According to Nextel, an extension of the construction requirement would also enable the
company to deploy a digital 900 MHz "pico cell" technology developed by Littlefeet, Inc. to resolve
coverage holes, and to alleviate near-far interference between its 800 MHz commercial operations
and adjacent 800 MHz public safety communications systems.
