I liked your idea:

My son hasn't reached that age yet, but I am certainly going to try to use this tact with him. I hope it works. Thanks.

Your observation:

to purchase more computer such as a faster CD ROM or more Ram or
a faster modem etc."

This indicates that many knowledgeable computer shoppers are indeed looking for PERFORMANCE above cost savings. This may not be Peer Pressure per se, but it sure indicates that customers have more in mind that the lowest cost box.
