You are quite correct!

For in the end, the currency that backs all other currencies is that of the personal time of the hard working consumer and prosumer (coined: Steve Jobs).

But the economic dilemma is more than even that. Technology has reached a point of acceleration of development where the average consumer doesn't have the time or the inclination to even attempt to understand what it is the market is trying to sell in the form of newer and more versatile gadgets. Does one really want to spend the relaxation part of ones day comparing cell phone features simply because ones cell phone is getting a little long in the tooth? Does one really need to concern one's self that there is yet another version of Windows out now, after just going through a decade of application bloatware upgrades?

Take a simple and extremely useful, relatively new concept like email. It's simple. It's easy. It's useful. And, once your address slips out from under your control, you find yourself wading through endless daily lists of unwelcome solicitations while sitting in the warmth of your own castle.

The web is strange and twisted, but it is the weave of techno-change in its current complexity that has corked the economic bottle.
