What happened in Sabra and Shatila was a tragedy. But anyone who wants justice should work to bring to trial those who committed the atrocities. Sharon says he did not foresee Phalangists’ actions. In that he was negligent, perhaps reprehensibly cynical, but not criminally liable. His role is identical to the role of Dutch peacekeepers that first disarmed Moslems of Srebrenica and then handed them to Bosnian Serbs to be slaughtered.
If those who committed the atrocities implicate Sharon, and if it will be shown that he was complicit in the atrocities, I’ll be the first one to demand that he be punished. But I don’t believe that that was the case, and I see absolutely no evidence of his complicity.
