I'm dipping my toe in here with some copper futures. Copper is priced at roughly the same level as the nadir of the Asian crisis, a point at which there was 200,000 more MT in LME inventory (and who know how much in Chinese hands).

RESEARCH ALERT-Goldman cuts Freeport '01 EPS outlook
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 04, 2001 12:00 PM
- Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Tuesday said it lowered its earnings outlook on mining company Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. for 2001 and raised its view for 2002.

Analyst Daniel McConvey, who maintained his ``recommended'' rating on the company, said lower copper price forecasts prompted him to reduce his 2001 estimate to 73 cents a share from 83 cents.

He increased the 2002 outlook to 84 cents a share from 66 cents because of projected reductions in interest expenses and smelter business losses.

``Freeport has the most attractive fundamentals of any company in our universe,'' the analyst said.
