>> Hongkong GSM Operator To Roll Out GPRS in September

09/03/2001

Hong Kong GSM 1800 operator New World Mobility (NWM) plans to launch its GPRS as soon as next month, according to company officials.

NWM marketing director Melanie Lee said the company is now in the final stage of testing the system, and expects to launch the service commercially in September. Lee expects the GPRS launch will double data's revenue contribution from 5 per cent to 10 per cent over the next 12 months.

If the roll-out stays on schedule, NWM will be the city's third mobile phone operator to launch GPRS, following Pacific Century CyberWorks'GPRS launch late last year and Hutchison Telecom's earlier this month.

NWM's Lee said the company has already finalized the pricing of the service, but declined to unveil details. Hutchison is charging monthly fees ranging from HK$88 (US$11.28) for 1MB(megabytes) of data to HK$498 for 30MB of data.
