Well, since volume of PIV versus all IA shipments will go out of next year at least 75-80% of units (even including AMD in the denominator), I believe that if a developer can benefit from the new instructions they will do PIV first. They will not abandon the installed based, but they will take advantage of the PIV instructions and architecture where it makes a difference… and there are a few placed that it really does. Software developers and their marketing departments started caring about what's coming a few years ago after getting caught flat footed during the original Pentium ramp which came on faster than they expected. The Pentium IV and its derivatives are ramping significantly faster than the original Pentium. I believe companies that optimize for PIV will also make sure their software works on the installed based. By Q4 of ’02 I expect to see min system requirements moving to 500Mhz PII or equivalent with 64MB of memory minimum and 1GH PIII with 128MB recommended for better performance for lots of 3D, audio, and video intensive applications.
