OK, you're saying the terminal built in right there where I insert my credit card is a PC architecture lookalike, or something close anyway? I never imagined them to have much intelligence right there, but I never thought about it for very long, either.

EDIT The back-end could theoretically be anything from a simple NT box all the way up through a mainframe.

I would imagine the banks would want the back end to have the utmost reliability, availability, etc., and not therefore be a simple NT box.
