Mike,

I opened a USA Bancshares account last year through Gomez with a $100 deposit. It took a couple of emails and a phone call to Gomez to be credited with the $100 bonus, and other people reported similar problems. I never did use the bank account, since I was happier with another internet account I opened at the same time. Then this spring USAB instituted a low balance monthly fee so I closed the account. It took about a month to receive my check for $200 plus interest.

I've since read on bulletin boards that both USAB and Gomez are having problems, which doesn't surprise me. I haven't seen any other offers for bonus payments for opening bank or brokerage accounts with such small amounts. It was only during the internet mania that any bank would want to open such a small account.

A friend ordered a jumbo bag of kitty litter from one of the dot coms in California. They offered free air delivery to NYC, so the whole order cost only about $5. Those were the "good old days" for the dot commies, when a dollar of revenue increased market cap by $10, even if the order was unprofitable. It should be a while before things get that crazy again.

Cheers,
John
