Networking stocks followed telecom plays south after Cisco Systems (CSCO) CEO John Chambers reportedly predicted that another round of consolidation would lead to the demise of many of the Nasdaq's top 100 companies. "With this [IT] slowdown, there's going to be a very rapid consolidation of the industry across all segments," he said at a conference in Tokyo, according to Dow Jones News Wires. "What you saw with Hewlett-Packard and Compaq is just one step." Cisco shares plunged 6% and were the most actively traded Nasdaq stock. Cisco competitors JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and Ciena (CIEN) dropped 3% and 7%, respectively.
