Globalstar was going to do 384 kbps in the second constellation. That's not super fast, but it's better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick and faster than most people enjoy with their terrestrial connections. As you say, Iridium is a slow system, with their computers stuck in the sky, unable to be upgraded, unlike Globalstar's which are on the ground. But right now, Globalstar struggles along at 9.6 kbps in bankrupt [almost] constellation 1. Globalstar is also [was] planning to offer SkyBridge high speed downloads to Globalstar customers, with uplinks via Globalstar satellites. I guess all that is on hold at the moment. Mq
