Taking a break from errands here and stumbled across this gem from Kitco while doing some thread scans.

I think it's the answer:

...make a $1000 investment in Nortel or a $1000 investment in beer a year ago....with $1000, and a transaction
cost of $35, you were able to purchase 7 shares at $123 each.... or you bought 33 cases of beer x 24 = 792
bottles.... you could drink about 15 bottles per week, and you wouldn't have to buy beer for a whole year....OK,
it's today and you need money....the 7 shares, at today's value is about $12, and selling it gets you $84, and after
paying the $35 transaction fee, you get only $49....OK, take back the empties to the beer store, and you get 33
cases x 24 bottles, at 10 cents per bottle, that comes to $79.20...INVEST IN BEER...
