I must be missing something here. Why is it that you do not have a choice? Even with a margin account, you can also open a cash account with the same broker and have selected shares moved to that account. Secondly, you can ask for the delivery of the shares (or have them kept in a safe at the brokerage). Finally, some brokerages allow you to specify if your shares can be lent out, even on a margin account. So if you don't like your broker, there are thankfully many more who'd be happy to oblige. Now granted, you do have to do some homework to get things your way because it is in the brokerage's interest to have you on a margin account and lend out your shares. But that does not equate to "essentially no choice".
